Winter blues...

I'm not a cold weather lover.  I'd prefer to stay inside if temps are below 65 degrees. Actually, 65 degrees is COLD in my opinion.  Today is cold here on the east coast...today temperatures are 21 degrees for the low and only 40 degrees for today's high. I don't even want to know what the windshield temps are.  How lucky am I that my sewing studio is only a few steps down the hall and I don’t have to go outdoors to go to work.
As I sit here wearing thick wool socks, sweat pants, sweat shirt and fingerless gloves yearning for the warm weather of spring and summer I received some wonderful heart "warming" news....we finalized our summer vacation plans and reservations have been confirmed.  (Did you hear the "Halleluiah Chorus" being sung by heavenly angels too?)
We are looking forward to our family summer vacation. It’s been a long while since we’ve been able to get everyone schedule to allow us all together for a week at the beach.  But THIS year it’s on!
We are beach people. We set up our chairs and make camp before breakfast and we don’t come off the beach until dinner time.  The water is refreshing; the life guards are young and tan. Just thinking about the sand, the sun the surf brings a smile to my face. Then I start to think about...lugging the coolers, the beach chairs, umbrellas, sand toys, boogie boards and other miscellaneous beach items from our place over the sand dune to the shore.  Ugh…I’m tired already.  I’m going to need a BIG bag!
I’m filled with excitement and anticipation for summer and “our week”.   What to do to fill the time until we are barefoot in the sand?  Well, I’ve started designing “Bette’s Big Beach Bag”. This bag will be large and still look good while carrying beach towels and toys.   I’ll keep you up-to-date on the design process and when you can get your own Big Beach Bag.

Just one more reason to BUY HANDMADE...

Check the inside of your expensive designer bag that's manufactured in China. Did they take the time to match and align the pocket fabric with the lining??? No?????? and you paid WHAT for your bag?

It's FINALLY here....so DON'T miss it!

This Saturday, October 6th from 10am-6pm......It's ART on the AVENUE !!!!!!

Art on the Avenue is a multi-cultural arts festival celebrating our community’s diversity through the arts in the Del Ray neighborhood in Alexandria, Virginia. This festival is held on the first Saturday in October, rain or shine! Every year, over 50,000 visitors stroll down Mt. Vernon Avenue in Del Ray, Alexandria, between Bellefonte and Hume Avenues – people are greeted by over 300 artists (jewelers – silversmith & beaders, woodworkers, pottery makers, soap crafters, glass makers, unique painters, sculptures, fabric artists), musicians (Irish, folk, rock n’ roll, country and more), and food vendors (hot dogs, BBQ, Indian, crab cakes, chocolate bananas dipped on a stick, home made cider donuts). Kids activities have always been a vital part of the festival — stuff your own scarecrow, paint a pumpkin, lotus flower design, weave screen art, to name a few.
Over 300 fine artists, artisans and craftspeople sell their handmade items, such as wheel thrown vases and bowls, tiles, sculpture, hand embossed leather belts, tote bags and purses, drawings and pastels, knitted and crocheted hats and gloves, woven scarves and shawls, gourmet food, fused and blown glass, jewelry, turned wood bowls, paintings, photography, wooden puzzles, and much more.

Come see us at Booth 139W!

Getting ready for Fall.

It's so hard for me to let go of summer! It's my favorite season…spending days at the beach or by the pool; the picnics and barbeques; baseball games; the steamed Maryland Blue crabs. Summer is the best time for me under the tent at craft shows…I’ll take sweat over cold feet and hands ANY DAY!!
Since I can’t stop the change of seasons and I can’t move to a beautiful Caribbean island I will put my flip-flops away and try to endure until next spring and summer.  I will admit that there is one saving grace for me when the weather turns chilly… it’s my love of Knitting and Crochet!!!!  As the temperatures begin to cool down I will start carrying my knitting bag with me everywhere. There will be miles of yarn worked into hats, scarves, cowls, neck warmers, fingerless mittens, purses and my VERY favorite quick project, Crocheted Felted Flowers. I make them by the dozens in tons of colors, felt them and wear them on all of my hats, purses, tote bags, jacket lapels and neck-warmer. It’s my way of keeping some colorful warm weather flowers with me throughout the cold dark winter.
